Return to Make a Mola

Step 2 - Cutting and Stitching

First Stage
Defining the figure with an outline

1. Baste or pin the middle layer over the foundation (white) layer

2. Poke your scissors through the top layer inside the traced line and start cutting INSIDE THE TRACED LINE about 1/8" for an allowance to turn under. Be careful not to cut the bottom layer. Cut only a little at a time.

3. Fold under on the traced line with a needle threaded to match the middle layer, start stitching the edge under. Follow the stitch diagrams for hints in cutting and clipping as you work. Make your stitches small and evenly spaced. Cut and stitch a little at a time as you work.

4. Keep working in this way, turning the piece as necessary to a comfortable position so you are stitching toward yourself.

5. Continue all around the bug figure until you are back to the starting point.
You now have a white bug surrounded by the middle layer. Save the cut-away inner piece to be used later.
